SILVERMAN AND HAMILTON SQUARE CONDOMINIUM ASSOCIATION present Mark
Dagley: Recent Paintings, curated by Brendan Carroll. This is the artist’s first
exhibition at Hamilton Square. Dagley’s paintings will be on view in the building’s
lobby from September 6, 2013 to November 29, 2013.
Mark Dagley: Recent Paintings features a selection of works on canvas completed
over the past four years. From a monochromatic grid to a taut horizontal chain,
Dagley relies on systemic variations of simple geometric motifs to create hardnosed
paintings that push the boundaries of abstract art. Composed with a no frills
approach, an uncompromising vision and a reliance on craftsmanship, Dagley’s work
stands apart in today’s digitized climate. His recent paintings are unique modernist
statements rooted in traditional artists’ practices.
“With the rare exception, all my paintings begin with small sketches in pencil,
more like quick scribbles really, just to catch the original idea while it’s fresh in my
mind. Then I proceed to a more formal drawing and/or working with different color
combinations, adjusting and correcting things along the way. Basically everything is
in its place in a preparatory work before I start on the full-scale painting. Of course
I leave myself the option to change anything at anytime. You usually have to let the
painting do what it wants to for things to actually come alive. Surprises are okay.”
Although Dagley is an internationally recognized artist, his work isn’t often shown in
the United States. Previous to his 2012 exhibition at Minus Space gallery in Brooklyn,
he had not had a solo painting show stateside in fifteen years. Mark Dagley: Recent
Paintings could not have come at a better time for the Jersey City-based artist. “I’ve
done a lot of paintings that I’ve never had the opportunity to exhibit, which is one of
the reasons I jumped at the chance to show in the Hamilton Square lobby.”
Not deterred by Hamilton Square’s atypical exhibition venue, Dagley chose work to
complement the building’s unique architectural niches and available wall space.
“I have no problem seeing my work on colored or tinted walls, just like you see in
people’s homes or in fine art museums throughout the world.”
Mark Dagley (b.1957, Washington, D.C.) attended the Corcoran School of Art in
Washington D.C. and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA. In the
early 1980s he was active in the East Village abstract painting scene and showed
alongside other pioneering abstract painters, including Oliver Mosset, James Nares,
and Alan Uglow.
Dagley’s painting Concentric Sequence (1996) was included in the groundbreaking
group exhibition Post-Hypnotic, which traveled throughout the United States from
1999 to 2001. Concentric Sequence was featured on the cover of the show’s catalog.
Work by Mark Dagley can be found in many national and international collections,
including The Broad Art Foundation, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía,
Musée des Beaux-Arts La Chaux-de-Fonds, Kunstmuseum St.Gallen, University of
Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), as well as numerous private collections. His solo
exhibitions have been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America, Flash Art International,
and Artnet.com. Dagley is a member of American Abstract Artists, an artist-run
organization founded in 1936 to foster the understanding of abstract and nonobjective art.
