affect : effect is a new series of paintings by artist Thomas John Carlson. The canvases feature gilded crowns, inextinguishable subterranean fires, snowcapped mountains, and fisticuffs. If the subject matter in Carlson’s new work is mystifying, the artist says: “blame my addiction to podcasts.” His muses include BBC World Global News, This American Life, The History of Rome, and Radio Lab. He doesn’t limit his inspiration to online white noise. Carlson is also stirred by masterpieces in art history, such as Rembrandt’s Supper at Emmaus to Jan van Eyck’s Ghent Altarpiece. Whether he is painting from direct observation or imagination, Carlson is in command of his technique.
Carlson has exhibited work at Jane’s Gallery, Eden Rock, St Barthelemy, F.W.I.; New York Academy of Art, New York, NY; Hunter College, Times Square Gallery, New York, NY. He has won many awards, including an Art Residency at Jane’s Gallery at The Eden Rock Hotel, in St Barthelemy, FWI; New York Academy of Art Research Fellowship; Posey Foundation Full Scholarship.
Carlson’s work is included in many public and private collections, including Richard Blumenthal, Eileen Guggenheim, David Matthews, Richard Prince. He received his M.F.A from the New York Academy of Art in 2006. He received his B.F.A. from Ringling School of Art and Design. In addition to his studio practice, Carlson founded Jersey City Art School in November 2009. He currently lives and works in Jersey City, NJ.
